CalFresh: Supporting California Students

Dr. Dizon-Ross, a CPL faculty affiliate, and former CPL postdoctoral scholar, presented on CPL’s research about the number of California College students who are enrolled in CalFresh. She presented as part of one of the virtual learning series held as part of the California Higher Education Basic Needs Alliance (CHEBNA) 2022 Learning Series. Sessions during this series address ways to continue supporting students in a number of areas, with access to information about financial aid, healthy food, safe housing, and overall health and mental health care.

Description of Event: With the landscape of CalFresh Food (SNAP) changing quickly due to factors like the public health emergency, legislative funding, and state and federal policy, campus outreach measures for CalFresh have ramped up.  During this session, participants learned how California campuses are leading the nation in innovative outreach strategies and advocacy for those experiencing food insecurity. This session offered the latest data on CalFresh Food participation rates for CCC and UC students; must-know federal and state policy updates affecting college students; demonstration of innovative tools and resources available to all California college staff members. Campus staff from across the state shared their best practices for virtual and on-campus activities and successful partnerships to increase awareness and application rates for college students.
